Golf in the Czech Republic

Czech Golf

The Czech Republic is probably best known for its unspoilt capital city Prague, the Czech national football and ice-hockey teams, and for its famous Pilsner beer. Not many associate the Czech Republic with golf even though it has a long tradition and very high standards.

The first golf course in the Czech Republic, as weH as the first in the entire Austro-Hunganan monarchy, was established in Karlovy Vary in 1904 and some of the first clubs were founded in the 1920's.

From the 1950's onwards, golf was strongly suppressed as a sport. After the political changes in 1989 the Czech people revived their passion for golf. Most of the courses were renovated and modernised and the Czech Golf Federation was one of the founding members of the European Golf Federation.

Karlstejn Golf Resort

With the dominant Karlstejn Castle in the background the fabulous Karlstejn Golf Resort is one of the most picturesque courses in the Czech Republic. It is conveniently located for British visitors, being situated just 25 miles from Prague.

Czech Golf

This 18-hole championship golf course hosted the 1997 Czech Open Championship. Amongst regular celebrity visitors are Bernhard Langer, Samuel L Jackson and Sean Connery.

Eco Golf Holidays

Au naturel ... Belle Dune eco-village near the Bay of Somme. Photograph: Kirsten Broomhall

What's an eco village? What's an eco golf holiday?

Belle Dune, 110 Km drive from Calais, is a lakeside village of 236 brightly painted wooden houses and 68 apartments and is sandwiched between lush green farmland and a 250ha protected nature reserve on sand dunes, which lead to the wide expanse of the Bay of Somme and has strong eco tendencies.

Belle Dune is an experiment. Pierre & Vacances, which owns the village and is aligned with the family holiday group Centre Parcs, has set the village up in partnership with WWF in France as a pilot site to promote sustainable tourism.

Its environmental selling points apart from its location, include being a traffic-free village; having its 18-hole golf course, which manages to sneak in between the reserve and the village, irrigated with non-drinking water; and ongoing care of the surrounding dunes, pine forests and man-made lakes.

Scotland Wants to Attract Chinese Golfers

St Andrews

JACK McConnell launched a drive yesterday to attract thousands of Chinese golf enthusiasts to play in Scotland.

The launch came as it emerged that Donald Trump, the billionaire American property tycoon, is close to signing a deal to develop part of an Aberdeenshire estate into a flagship golf links development.

Officials estimate that Chinese tourism could be worth £70 million to Scotland over the next four years, now that many of the travel restrictions on Chinese citizens have been lifted by their government.

Mr McConnell, a keen golfer himself, with a handicap of 16, believes that Scotland can take advantage of what is potentially one of the biggest tourist markets in the world for golf tourism.

The packages are the first to be offered to the Chinese since last year's removal of restrictions on Chinese tourists travelling to the UK. They will include stays of up to five nights around Scotland, including courses at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

The package is being promoted by the airline, VisitScotland and by selected Chinese golf clubs.

Mr McConnell said: "The whole world is trying to target the massive Chinese tourism market that is opening up. We need to play to our strengths and golf is certainly one of them."

He continued: "There are many fantastic facilities being developed at present here in China, but I believe that any golfer who never plays in Scotland is a golfer unfulfilled. There is something special about playing at the home of golf.

"The Chinese have a strong attachment to traditions and history and I know that the birthplace of golf will hold a very strong appeal."

Meanwhile, officials of the Trump organisation's golf development wing, Trump Golf Properties, are understood to be in detailed negotiations to buy the Menie Links, close to the mouth of the River Ythan.

The site, about seven miles north of Aberdeen, will be the company's first luxury golf development outside the US.

Golf Resorts in Oman

Golf Holidays in Oman

The efforts of the Sultanate of Oman's ministry of tourism to triple tourism in the country by 2010 have not been in vain. The country is rapidly coming to be regarded by many to be one of the most prominent emerging markets in the GCC and the surge in the Sultanate's popularity in recent years has raised hopes within the tourism sector that the next few years will be a boom time for Oman.

Since its inception in 2004, the Omani ministry of tourism has been proactive in driving what Zamora refers to as the country's “transition. Relaxed visa regulations now make it easier for travellers from 76 nations to visit the country, and the government has been working towards updating the country's tourism strategy as part of its current five-year plan.

“Here in Oman we are witnessing a transition period where there is a greater interest in visiting the country than ever before, says Tony Zamora, director of operations for Oman at the InterContinental Hotels Group and general manager of the group’s Al Bustan Palace in Muscat.

“With stunning year-round weather, Oman is the ideal place for a holiday. It is just the place to relax, get in touch with nature and discover the beauty of Arabia in a tranquil setting. But because of the stunning environment, it is also becoming a hot spot for business and MICE travellers, confirms Zamora.

Among the ambitious tourism plans in the Sultanate is the development of the $800 million resort complex known as The Wave. Built on reclaimed land along the Seeb seafront, the wave will stretch along 7.3km of beachfront west of Muscat and is scheduled to open in 2009. The resort will include three hotels, a golf course, a marina with yacht club and upscale real estate.

The western edge of The Wave will accommodate a five-star, 200-room beachfront hotel and spa. A 300-room golf and conference resort nearby will accommodate guests wishing to play at the newly constructed 18-hole golf course, and an additional 505 residential villas will overlook the golf course and the ocean.

Further expansion of Oman's tourism industry comes in the form the RO119 million ($308 million) Al Sawadi Tourism project. It is hoped that the resort will provide a strong stand-alone destination for European guests as well as a must-see attraction for tourists from the GCC countries.

Located on approximately 34km² of land within Oman's Barka region, the Al Sawadi resort will form the first high class traditional Omani-style resort. When completed in 2009, the resort will include various luxury hotels, two 18-hole golf courses, a golf and country club, a family water park, private villas and a multitude of leisure, entertainment and sports facilities.

Golf Holidays in Ireland

Ireland has established itself internationally as a major golf destination, particularly in recent years with the hosting of major competitions such as the American Express World Championships in 2002 and the Ryder Cup in 2006.

Ireland is best known for its wonderful links courses – and possesses almost 40% of the world's genuine links. Some Irish links courses have been around for over a hundred years, while others are modern developments created to fit the landscape from which they are carved. Some are internationally renowned, while others – the ‘hidden gems' – are waiting to be discovered.

But Ireland also has a range parkland courses which offer a supreme test of skills. They are courses very much in tune with nature, yet designed to make the golfer use every club in the bag.

Irish golf has a special place in the heritage of the game, producing great players like Christy O' Connor Senior, Fred Daly, Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley. By playing an Irish championship course, you can play the same courses that helped shape these champions – and the same ones that gave golf's international superstars some of their proudest moments.

Golf Holidays in the Sunshine State

Florida is all about sun and fun, sea and sand, theme parks and palm trees. But, during a visit to the Sunshine State last November, we added resilience to that list. Just weeks after the hurricanes, resorts were clearing up the debris and bare branches were sprouting new leaves. For holiday-makers, Florida was up and running again; hotels and restaurants were humming.

A comprehensive guide to Florida has been written by Kathy Arnold and Paul Wade for the Telegraph.

Highlights

The Sunshine State has moved out of the long-haul category and is competing with Spain as a short-break destination. Though the peak seasons are still Easter plus the half-term holidays in February and October, the summer market is declining. British visitors realise that traipsing round theme parks in August is no fun, and that there's more to Florida than Disney.

Go for the sheer fun of it. That's why most of the 1.4 million British visitors to Florida fly in to Orlando. As well as the world-famous theme parks, central Florida is home to dozens of lesser-known attractions, as well as scores of golf courses and malls, hundreds of lakes and thousands of villas.

Golf in Thailand, Pattaya

Pattaya, as well as being the number one beach resort in Thailand, is also one of the best kept secrets in golf; with nineteen world class courses set in spectacular surroundings.

The golf courses are designed by some of the greatest names in golf; Laem Chabang by Jack Nicklaus , Great Lakes by Nick Faldo and Sriracha by Gary Player, this course was used on the inaugural tournament for the Asian PGA tour.

For most of the year, the weather is excellent and provides ideal conditions for playing golf. The hottest time of year is between March and May when temperatures on some days can be hotter than the yearly average of 33° Centigrade, most of year though temperatures are around 30° Centigrade or less.

Playing in this delightful tropical climate all year round, the caddy lightens the load, and regular stops at the attractive watering holes encourage peak performance on the course. Afterwards the high standard of clubhouse facilities and services complete a memorable round of golf wherever you play. For visitors without clubs or shoes there is no problem as the hire of top brands of golf clubs are available for around 600 baht. Golf Holiday Experience in the Napa-Sonoma Wine Country

Just in time for the holiday gift-giving season, "Luxury Golf Experiences" , created by Kris Moe of Kris Moe Golf Schools, are packages offering a tantalizing array of activities to satisfy the senses of golfers with gourmet tastes in wine and food. It is an “over the top package that happens, of course, in Napa/ Sonoma wine country.

Some folks to like to lounge by the pool on their vacation, while others enjoy a more active approach to their vacation time. It's the latter Kris Moe has in mind. With one of his “Luxury Golf Experiences you can improve your golf game, sipping and learn about wines, put on a chef's hat and do a cooking class before luxuriating in the spa then sitting down to a superb four-course dinner. Who's to say “learning vacations can't be in an environment of utter relaxation. For this unique pro-active vacation the wine country is a special destination, because it has everything a gourmet and spa queen may be looking for. That includes a fascinating history, fine shopping, biking, hiking, racecar driving, and especially a classic golf course, the Sonoma Golf Club , that the great golf champion of the past, Sam Snead, once pronounced as one of his all-time favorites.

The golfer's experience with Kris Moe and his team of teachers is always customized, even if it means bringing a massage therapist onto the range. As Kris likes to say, “Why wait until the hotel spa? Golfers can benefit from some rubdowns during the golf school session. I know they will feel more relaxed, and it makes for a higher quality experience. This type of trademark personalized touch created by the school's founder and owner, Kris Moe is what golfers and their companions can expect on arriving at the resort, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa ; the little things that make a vacation superbly rewarding. Another nice touch, if you'd rather not deal with the stress of driving and rental cars, is a chauffeured limousine to take you from and to your home or the airport.

Another component unique to this golf experience is the personalized attention each golfer receives. Classes average only two persons per instructor, and some might be totally one-on-one private teaching sessions. With this level of intimacy the golfer dictates the format. He may want to work on his swing all day on the range, or have a playing lesson on the course. Either way the learning can be profound. It is Kris Moe's experience that when he has an entire day or two with any golfer, the learning crosses over into many areas that convey much more than simple golf mechanics. It holds for professional tournament players, or novice golfers. This kind of coaching connects or reconnects a golfer to why he plays golf in the first place. The experience has a lasting impression. It is why seventy percent of those who come to a Kris Moe golf school come back again, and refer friends.

Majorca as a Golf Holiday Destination

The largest of the Balearic Islands – the group also includes Menorca and Ibiza – Majorca is a green jewel set in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain. In addition to its stunning countryside and charming villages, the island offers a host of excellent water sports activities, as well as having earned a reputation as a golfer's paradise.

Claudia Fans Visitor Interest in Majorca

Having fallen in love with Majorca as a child, Claudia Schiffer remains a big fan of the Spanish isle. And while earlier this year she sold her luxurious holiday home complex there, the German supermodel was clearly more than happy to share her enthusiasm for the region by promoting the Balearic Islands at the World Travel Market in London.

Dressed in a brilliantly coloured ethnic dress and this season's hottest new footwear look – low-heeled, knee-high boots – the hard-working blonde put on a star turn with a traditional Spanish fan to draw attention to upcoming events, including the Majorca Classic golf tournament next October.

Before wedding British film director Matthew Vaughn, Claudia spent numerous holidays on the island with her parents and continued to visit with her new family, two-year-old Caspar and daughter Clementine, one.

Having constructed a six-acre, multi million-pound holiday complex on the island, however, the catwalk star found that she had become too much of a local attraction in her own right and in August sold Camp de Mar to a Russian multi-millionaire for over £7.5 million.
