Golf in the Czech Republic

Czech Golf

The Czech Republic is probably best known for its unspoilt capital city Prague, the Czech national football and ice-hockey teams, and for its famous Pilsner beer. Not many associate the Czech Republic with golf even though it has a long tradition and very high standards.

The first golf course in the Czech Republic, as weH as the first in the entire Austro-Hunganan monarchy, was established in Karlovy Vary in 1904 and some of the first clubs were founded in the 1920's.

From the 1950's onwards, golf was strongly suppressed as a sport. After the political changes in 1989 the Czech people revived their passion for golf. Most of the courses were renovated and modernised and the Czech Golf Federation was one of the founding members of the European Golf Federation.

Karlstejn Golf Resort

With the dominant Karlstejn Castle in the background the fabulous Karlstejn Golf Resort is one of the most picturesque courses in the Czech Republic. It is conveniently located for British visitors, being situated just 25 miles from Prague.

Czech Golf

This 18-hole championship golf course hosted the 1997 Czech Open Championship. Amongst regular celebrity visitors are Bernhard Langer, Samuel L Jackson and Sean Connery.

  • 18-hole championship golf course (Length 5880 m)
  • Driving range
  • Restaurant and bar
  • Club house
  • pro-shop
  • Clubs, trolleys and carts rental

Eco Golf Holidays

Au naturel ... Belle Dune eco-village near the Bay of Somme. Photograph: Kirsten Broomhall

What's an eco village? What's an eco golf holiday?

Belle Dune, 110 Km drive from Calais, is a lakeside village of 236 brightly painted wooden houses and 68 apartments and is sandwiched between lush green farmland and a 250ha protected nature reserve on sand dunes, which lead to the wide expanse of the Bay of Somme and has strong eco tendencies.

Belle Dune is an experiment. Pierre & Vacances, which owns the village and is aligned with the family holiday group Centre Parcs, has set the village up in partnership with WWF in France as a pilot site to promote sustainable tourism.

Its environmental selling points apart from its location, include being a traffic-free village; having its 18-hole golf course, which manages to sneak in between the reserve and the village, irrigated with non-drinking water; and ongoing care of the surrounding dunes, pine forests and man-made lakes.

1600 Rush For Job at the Open

GOLF fanatics from as far away as Japan are expected to be among those queuing for jobs during the Open golf championship this year.

Around 1,600 temporary jobs will be created to help service the thousands of visitors to the championship at Hoylake.

But as local people queue up at the jobs fair open day this week, they will be competing against a hardcore group of regulars who travel to the Open each year.

Stuart McDougall, spokesman for the Royal & Ancient which organises the tournament, said there were a significant number of people who took holidays from their usual job to work at the Open.

He said: "There is a Japanese man who comes every year, pays his own travel and accommodation expenses and works as a steward, just to take part.

He's been coming for many years and doesn't even take any pay for the work - he just loves it.

Spokesman for Jobcentre Plus Euan Cragg-James said they had been receiving calls from across the country requesting details of jobs during the tournament.

He added: "Hoylake Jobcentre Plus office started receiving telephone calls about The Golf Open as far back as January, with one customer calling from the South of England requesting 10 application forms for her and her friends, who apparently follow the Open every year."

Those who want to apply must be available for work between July 16 and July 23. Some posts will require people starting at an earlier date.

Estepona Golf

Estepona Golf is privately owned by Rory Leader.
His policy is to concentrate on visiting golfers as a 'pay as you play' course.

The 18 hole course, which is located on the inland side of the main coastal road at Km. 150, just one mile from Estepona town centre, was designed by José Luis López and first opened in 1989. The design uses the natural landscape which is set against the Sierra Bermeja mountain range, and enjoys sea views from most parts of the course. The fairways are wide and the greens large which provides a challenge for players of all levels, but doesn't penalise the average golfer.

There are many palms, eucalyptus and wild olive trees on the course, and players have a great opportunity to enjoy many rare species of wildlife, particularly on the second half.
